Creamy, tangy, and bursting with probiotics, this traditional milk kefir recipe has been passed down through generations. Made with live kefir grains, it’s a powerhouse of beneficial bacteria that supports gut health naturally.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk (preferably organic)
  • 2 tablespoons live milk kefir grains
  • 1 clean glass quart jar
  • Breathable cloth or coffee filter
  • Rubber band

Instructions

  1. Place your kefir grains in a clean glass jar.
  2. Pour the milk over the grains and stir gently.
  3. Cover with a breathable cloth secured with a rubber band.
  4. Leave at room temperature (68-78°F) for 24-48 hours.
  5. When thickened and pleasantly tangy, strain out the grains using a plastic strainer.
  6. Store the kefir in the fridge and reuse the grains for your next batch.

Grandma’s Tip

The warmer your kitchen, the faster the kefir will ferment! In summer, check it after 18 hours. The grains will grow over time — share the extras with friends!
